The latest buzzword in the environmental community is carbon footprint. Have you ever thought about your carbon foodprint? This is the amount of carbon expended into the atmosphere to get food into your body. In other words if you live on a farm, grow and raise your own food (preferably organic) then your carbon foodprint would be much smaller than, let’s say, an urban dweller who shops at the local supermarket and buys all prepackaged and processed digestibles. Of course the carbon foodprint extends beyond where you get your food. It also takes into consideration how you get your food. Are you driving an SUV on your grocery errands? Or is the local farmer’s market a mere bicycle ride away? Here a few things to think about when determining your carbon foodprint.
- food preferences - vegan, vegetarian, omnivore
- type of food - organic, non-organic, local, imported
- packaging - types of packaging (plastic, aluminum, cardboard)
- recycling - recycle or compost
- transportation - hybrid, bike or SUV
